Grow Your Own Drugs

My grandparents had home remedies for everything from cold sores to runny noses, and they always worked, so I’ve always been fascinated with the concept of resolving common ailments with everyday ingredients found at home. Obviously, it’s very important not to self-diagnose or medicate yourself or your family without first consulting your doctor, so be responsible, but given an effective alternative, I would choose a home remedy over a pharmaceutical any day.

James Wong is an ethnobotanist who hosts a very popular television show on the BBC and also lectures at university. His book Grow Your Own Drugs offers alternative ways to safely use ingredients like cucumbers, fennel, artichokes, garlic, ginger, tea tree oil, and witch hazel to treat common everyday ailments like upset stomach, insect bites, motion sickness, athlete’s foot and water retention. Of course home remedies have been around for centuries but I think that James’ approach is easy to understand and everything old is new again.
