Totally Toulouse
It must be exciting to build an art collection worthy of such a major exhibit at the High Museum, but Atlanta philanthropists, Irene and Howard Stein have done just that, and lucky for us, the Steins are graciously sharing their passion for Henri Toulouse-Lautrec with Atlanta and the world.
Henri Toulouse-Lautrec was the French Post-Impressionist painter and printmaker who famously captured Paris’s Montmartre cabaret and bohemian life on posters and prints. Living during the belle époque, or “beautiful era” of late 19th century Paris allowed Toulouse to tell the stories of Paris nightlife, particularly those of the Moulin Rouge, through his artwork. And the knowledge that many of the characters Toulouse immortalized actually existed has insured his popularity with art enthusiasts worldwide.
Toulouse-Lautrec and Friends will feature 80 works by the painter, including the rare “Elle Series” (1896), “La Clownesse au Moulin Rouge” (1897), ”Moulin Rouge: La Goulue” (1891) and “Miss Loïe Fuller” (1893). Mark your calendars: the exhibit opens January 29 and continues through May 1, 2011.
