Squishy Sofas
What’s the deal with the squishy sofas that seem to be showing up in design magazines all of a sudden?
That was a recent reader question that I was also curious about, so after a bit of super-sleuthing (I always loved Nancy Drew), I discovered that the squishy sofas are produced by a Swiss company called de Sede. Now, de Sede has been around since the 1960s, but the sofas are currently back in vogue thanks to designers like Kelly Wearstler who used both the Terraza and the Non-Stop (above) in her Beverly Hills home and L.A. designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard who used a Terraza sofa (below) in a show house interior for Veranda magazine.
A unique feature of the leather and foam sofas is that the cushions are zipped together allowing for endless variations on seating arrangements. For many of us unfortunately, the price for the custom-designed sofas, which start at $4000, might be a bit high, but vintage sofas are available through multiple vendors on 1st Dibs, so you might be able to negotiate a better deal there. Good luck!
