Magnolia Girls:
"second sundays,pt.1"
FADE IN:
INTERIOR: MAYLEE’S BEDROOM–MORNING
White curtains are billowing in the wind near an open window, the scent of jasmine fills the air from a long-burning Diptyque candle, clothes and shoes are scattered around the all-white room that is immaculate otherwise. MAYLEE and JORDAN are asleep in bed.
COLLIN (V.O.)
(singing)
I’m wishing on a star
To follow where you are
I’m wishing on a dream
To follow what it means
CLOSE ON on MAYLEE as she takes a deep breathe and opens her eyes to discover that JORDAN is inches away and staring at her. Nervously, MAYLEE blushes and pulls the sheet over her mouth.
JORDAN
This is so much better than my dreams.
MAYLEE
(blushing)
You’re hung over.
JORDAN
A bit, but it doesn’t change the way I feel.
MAYLEE
(slightly annoyed)
Jordan…no complications, remember?
JORDAN
We can work through your fears together.
I love you, May and I’m not letting go because you’re scared.
MAYLEE
In my heart I know that this….as fantastic as it is…can not last.
I don’t want to pretend..I like my life.
JORDAN
(kissing her forehead)
Love me, May.
Love me, May.
MAYLEE
(relenting)
I…I do.
JORDAN
Wait, what? You love me?
(fist pump in the air and yells…)
Yes! Maylee loves me!
MAYLEE
(laughing)
You’re crazy. Do you know that? Crazy!
MAYLEE and JORDAN kiss passionately and JORDAN begins to remove MAYLEE’s dressing gown when she grabs his hand to stop him.
MAYLEE
It’s second Sunday.
JORDAN
(kissing her neck)
OK, it’s second Sunday.
MAYLEE
The girls are expecting me at Collin’s for brunch.
JORDAN
(kissing the length of her arm)
Oh, come on.
MAYLEE
Sorry.
MAYLEE hops out the bed and JORDAN reaches across the bed, grabs a remote and turns the TV to Meet the Press.
MAYLEE
(glancing at the TV)
Meet the Press?
JORDAN
Do you mind?
MAYLEE smiles as she walks over to JORDAN and kisses him on the forehead.
MAYLEE
It’s who you are. I wouldn’t try to change that.
I told you…complicated.
JORDAN
And I told you, I got this.
(flipping channels)
How long will you be?
MAYLEE
A few hours.
MAYLEE turns and walks into the bathroom and turns on the shower.
JORDAN
(raising his voice slightly)
Can I stay the night? I’ll cook dinner.
MAYLEE
Dinner would be nice.
INTERIOR: COLLIN’S APARTMENT–MORNING
The doorbell rings and DYLAN answers the door. ALDEN is standing in the hallway with two boxes of baked goodies. She walks in, hands the boxes to DYLAN who places them on a table.
ALDEN
Dylan! How are you, kiddo?
DYLAN
Good. What about you?
ALDEN removes her coat, hands it to DYLAN, and he hangs it in the closet.
ALDEN
I’m just peachy, Dylan.
So, do you have a girlfriend yet?
DYLAN
(blushing)
Ah, you know. A few, but Mom doesn’t like any of them.
ALDEN
Oh, don’t worry about her. She’ll never like them.
COLLIN
(yells from the kitchen)
I heard that. Alden, stop stirring the pot.
ALDEN and DYLAN each grab a box and walk into the kitchen where COLLIN is cooking at the stove and MARISA is reading the Washington Post. ALDEN and DYLAN place the boxes on the kitchen counter.
DYLAN
Mom, I’m out.
COLLIN
OK, listen to Ms. Jones, have fun, but be back before 5pm.
DYLAN
(walking away)
Got it.
ALDEN
(grabbing a pastry from a box)
What’s happening, ladies?
MARISA
(glancing up from her newspaper)
Jake asked Collin out.
ALDEN
What???
Do tell, Ms. Collin.
COLLIN
There is nothing to tell. We work together.
ALDEN
Who’s been more supportive of your singing career?
I think you owe him.
MARISA
I don’t think she owes him anything.
But I still think she should go out with him.
ALDEN
The well’s been dry for a few years now, Collin.
COLLIN
And I should sleep with Jake?
ALDEN
Damn, Collin… live a little.
MARISA
That’s what I’ve been saying, but
she thinks it will ruin the creative relationship.
COLLIN
Singing is important to me and
I’ve lost so much time already.
The doorbell rings and ALDEN walks to the door and opens it. MAYLEE is standing there and ALDEN and MAYLEE hug and exchange greetings. They both walk into the kitchen.
MAYLEE
Good morning, ladies…
What did I miss?
ALDEN
Jake asked Collin out….
and she said no.
COLLIN
I didn’t say anything.
MARISA
I’m just trying to figure out the hesitation.
COLLIN
There’s no hesitation.
MAYLEE
Not everyone needs a man to feel whole, Marisa.
ALDEN
No, you don’t, but how often do you find a man
who will go out of his way for you like Jake does for Collin?
MAYLEE
You mean like, keep your bed warm and cook dinner for you tonight?
ALDEN, MARISA and COLLIN squeal with delight. COLLIN places a frittata and a platter of sliced fruit on the center table. MAYLEE is mischievously laughing as she walks to the refrigerator and grabs the butter and orange juice. ALDEN grabs a basket and places the croissants inside.
COLLIN
No girl, no! Do tell…you left the Congressman in your bed?
ALDEN
(to Collin)
See how excited you get?
I’m just sayin’…
MARISA
So, Jordan’s at home waiting for you?
MAYLEE
(smiling broadly as she places the items on the table)
Well, you know…what can I say?
ALDEN
(places the pastries on the table and sits down)
About damn time.
MARISA
(placing a napkin in her lap)
Bait and hook, girl.
Bait and hook.
ALDEN
Cause if you don’t…
someone else surely will.
MAYLEE
(sitting down)
Spoken like someone with experience.
COLLIN
(sitting down)
Who’s turn to say grace?
MARISA’s cellphone starts to ring and ALDEN looks down to see that the call is from CAMERON. MARISA grabs the phone, MAYLEE notices MARISA’s nervousness and MAYLEE and ALDEN make eye contact.
MARISA
Hello.
(pause)
Oh, Hi Omar. What’s up?
ALDEN
(rolling her eyes at Marisa)
Um hmmm.
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.
COLLIN
(bewildered)
What are you guys talking about?
ALDEN
(glaring at Marisa)
It’s time to spill the beans…
MARISA
(walking out of the kitchen)
Alden. Stop.
MAYLEE
No, Marisa. I agree with Alden.
Spill or we will.
COLLIN (V.O.)
(singing)
I’m wishing on all the rainbows that I see
I’m wishing on all the people who really dream
I’m wishing on tomorrow rain never comes
I’m wishing on all the things yet to come
