Vintage Domino: Tori Mellott

OK, my lovelies, I’m taking it old school today, back to September 2008 when our beloved Domino was on fire and featured this popular abode by the design maestro of petite luxe, Ms. Tori Mellott. I’ve featured several petite spaces on ZR before, but Tori’s apartment, in its various incarnations is a classic and besides I really like Tori’s chic way of mixing high with low, so let’s review, shall we?

Creatively maximizing storage is always a necessity in a small space, so by adding shelves in her hallway,Tori countered the lack of sufficient storage elsewhere in the apartment. A self-described “pack rat”, Tori used shelving from West Elm to display her one-of-a-kind finds and tableware collections. The addition of the Manuel Canovas “Jouvenance” wallpaper is a high element that takes the interior to the next level. The pendant lamp is from Circa Lighting.

From a doorway near the kitchen, we peek inside Tori’s bedroom where she maximized the high for comfort with a custom headboard from Avery Boardman and beautiful monogrammed white bedding. I agree that the bedroom is one room worth spending a few extra bucks. The op art prints are by Victor Vasarely.

In the kitchen, the “Jouvenance” wallpaper mixes brilliantly with Tori’s cabinet’s emerald green paint from Pratt & Lambert called “Bed of Pine”.

In her living room, Tori’s bold use of Farrow & Ball’s striped wallpaper not only adds drama, but tricks the eye into believing that the room is larger. The oversized Robert Abbey pendant lamp also adds to that effect. The antique gold-trimmed Moroccan coffee table combined with simple white parsons tables on either side of the sofa create another interesting high/low contrast.

Accessories play a huge part in Tori’s decor success too. You might think that she would go minimal and edit within such a small space, but Tori went full bore and I love it! Over the sofa, Tori created a sophisticated arrangement by surrounding a Corinth convex mirror with smaller found art. The resulting effect adds height and a feeling of expanse to the room.

Lastly, Tori painted her floors and custom bookshelves in Benjamin Moore’s “White Dove”. The pair of white lacquer stools in front of her library can be used to store books or even as extra seating while entertaining. So, are you convinced yet that you can live well in a small space? I think Tori proves that if you are creative and bold in your design choices, you can live fabulously within the confines of 450 square feet.

And now…for some Domino-related good news! If you haven’t heard, Domino is back…well, for one special edition, at least, which will be published on April 17th.
