Steven Meisel in Black + White
“I definitely live in the present. I know people probably think of me as living in the past. I do like certain periods in fashion. But I don’t live in the past at all. I’m very much now and tomorrow. But when I go through old pictures, yes, I cry. It’s not a sad cry. It’s a melancholy one, but mixed with happiness, too.”
The 1990s were the age of supermodels and no photographer defined that era, for me, more than Steven Meisel. Steven was a sort of fairy godfather to the supers and instinctively captured then and continues to capture now, fashion story lines that are innovative, thought-provoking and utterly dreamy.
Remember the controversial book SEX, that he photographed for Madonna? Or the multi-platinum selling CD cover Daydream that Steven shot for Mariah Carey? Or maybe you remember the iconic fashion campaigns he created for Versace, Valentino and Louis Vuitton? Guaranteed you’ve seen Steven’s work and you just didn’t know it. No worries, I’ve gathered some of my favorite images from Steven’s exceptional body of work with a heavy emphasis on the legendary supermodels.
Steven, you send me dreaming. Thanks for that.
