In Rome: Laocoon + His Sons

vatican-laocoonLAOCOON + HIS SONS is one of the more majestic sculptures I saw while visiting THE VATICAN in Rome. The sculpture depicts the invincible Trojan, LAOCOON, as he battles sea serpents who’ve gotten hold of his sons. Greek mythology suggests that the serpents were sent to kill LAOCOON to prevent him from revealing the Trojan Horse left on the beach at Troy. With LAOCOON dead, soldiers would unwittingly take the horse into the city center with enemy soldiers hidden inside who, at nightfall, would open the gates to the city of Troy, so their army could destroy it.
