Eva Cassidy’s Songbird

EVA CASSIDY was a phenomenal singer from Washington, DC who use to perform at places like Blues Alley in Georgetown at the peak of her success. Unfortunately, Eva died after a fight with cancer at age 33, so she is still relatively unknown.

Years ago, I received an email from one of my best girlfriends telling me that I just had to buy Songbird by this young singer named Eva Cassidy. After one listen, I was so taken by Eva’s seering, yet substantial interpretations of classic jazz, blues, go-go and even gospel music that I purchased all of her albums.

Eva was known mostly through word of mouth because she was such an “artist” that she refused to be pigeonholed when record companies tried to classify her as one genre or another. It slowed her career, but not her talent. If you’re looking for a true songstress for your music collection, I encourage you to give Eva’s Songbird a listen.
