Hidden Figures

This is one instance when the book and the movie are both really good. Everyone in Charlottesville is buzzing about UVA alum MARGOT LEE SHETTERLY’S book and movie HIDDEN FIGURES — the story of three African American women whose worked transformed astronautics for NASA during America’s space race with Russia in the mid- 20th century. Margot grew up in Hampton, Virginia because her father was a scientist at NASA and it was Margot’s dad who sparked her interest in the untold story of these “human computers” played by Taraji P Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae. When Margot realized most of us had never heard the story, she began extensive research, wrote Hidden Figures, and soon after Hollywood came calling.
