Dancer In the Dark

With our portrait of an Urban Princess complete, we wanted to explore the concept of dimension, so we decided to “play” with highlights and shadows. With light playing such an important role in photography, we knew it would be a challenge, but capturing Jasmine’s movements as reflections of light on her body was the goal, so most of the light was stripped away and we were left with deep shadows. Inspired by Alvin Ailey and Bob Fosse and moody films like CabaretFlashdance and Chicago, we imagined a dancer so consumed by perfection that she practiced in a dark studio late at night.

I’m a dancer
That’s what I am
I’m a dancer
Give me the steps
I’ll come through
Give me somebody
to dance for
Give me somebody
to show
Let me wake up
in the morning
to find I’ve somewhere
exciting to go
I’m a dancer
Let me dance for you
