At Home with Will + Jada Smith

The Smith Family

It’s a very rare occasion when a major shelter magazine publishes the home of an African American family, let alone a cover feature, so the September issue of Architectural Digest is a big deal in many regards. I applaud Margaret Russell and her team for producing a lovely cover story with inspiring interior design images of the home where entertainers WILL + JADA SMITH live with their children. For all of their success, they’ve never courted unwarranted media attention and because they’re not regulars in the tabloids their fans and design enthusiasts alike will be excited to read this issue of Architectural Digest.

When Deborah Needleman was editor of Domino she told me that Domino covers that featured African Americans were among their all-time best sellers, so by featuring Will + Jada, Architectural Digest expands their reach into an entirely new demographic and with magazine sales slumping, that’s a good thing for them, but it’s also a good thing for those of us who appreciate the added diversity.
