New York Fashion Week 2012

So, here’s what you need to know:

Target launched their highly anticipated collaboration with Missoni which included everything from coffee mugs to clothing to patio furniture. But so much for the democratization of luxury because some enterprising folks bought up slabs of Missoni product to sell on eBay at luxury prices.

As for parties, all the raves were for Barney’s karaoke party honoring woman of the year Carine Roitfeld. But let’s give a “karaoke” Grammy to legendary Italian designer Valentino Garavani for his rendition of Frank Sinatra’s My Way.

Like last year, Marc Jacobs was THE talk of fashion week. First he decided at the last minute that his southern dance hall presentation would close fashion week, so everyone had to scramble to re-arrange their plans because you don’t miss Marc’s show. And there is ongoing speculation that Marc might leave Louis Vuitton to become Creative Director at Christian Dior. I can imagine this must be a dream opportunity for a creative artist like Marc.

Most under-reported stories of fashion week:
The 10th anniversary of 9/11 fell on Sunday and many designers dedicated their shows to 9/11 or donated funds to 9/11 charities.

Every season Vogue editor Anna Wintour hosts a pop culture figure during fashion week (or at least they get seated next to her) and this year the golden girl was rapper Nicki Minaj. However, the bloom fell off the rose when it was reported that Nicki’s “puff ball” ensemble was a plagiarized copy of young designer Jessica Rogers.

Most over-reported stories of the week:
The other front row surprise was pro ballers like Amaré, Melo, D. Wade and King James making appearances at various shows. Rumor has it that D.Wade was asking the fashion elite for advice on what to name his new clothing line. I’m working on getting an answer for y’all. Stay tuned.

The movie that continues to inspire a thousand collections:

The Great Gatsby

My stand out show:

I already declared it a newness of sexy. It was Prabal Gurung!

That 1940’s detail made famous by designers like Christian Dior is back in a huge way for Spring. The over-skirt that flares from the waist is called peplum and was prominent in many collections.

Derek Lam’s presentation was mostly dresses, but in the few trousers he showed he had everyone transfixed on the most special of details for Spring 2012…a fierce cuff!

For Spring it’s all about strong eyebrows and minimal make-up with a richly saturated lip similar to the one above courtesy of a Mac Pro lip pencil in Bittersweet. And for that lady-like touch…matching nail polish like Deborah Lippmann’s Just Walk Away Renee all shown at Donna Karan.

I realize that fashion is fantasy and I’ve been to Africa several times and it IS truly inspiring and you do come back wanting everyone to experience the beauty and majesty of the continent, but I am beyond over collections that are tribal or safari-inspired. The truth is when you go on safari you realize that no one dresses like that and all Africans want to talk about is American fashion!
