It’s A Southern Thing

I connected with MICAH and MARIANNA WHITSON right away. You see, Micah is from Alabama and I’m from Mississippi, so we were practically neighbors growing up and we both married really cool people from North Carolina.

And, get this, we all moved to Boston for our careers.

We loved our time in Boston, and Micah and Marianna still live there, but no city can replace the South.

In fact, I’ve never met anyone who’s not proud of being a Southerner, although I’ve met plenty of people who wish they were born below the Mason-Dixon line. And Micah and Marianna get that. They understand that most people, no matter how far they go in life, always have a longing for home and an unwavering need to connect with their roots, especially if they’re Southern, so they decided to design what they know.

Using a vintage letterpress machine with movable type and wood blocks, Micah and Marianna who work in advertising as graphic designers, began creating limited-edition posters in homage to the thirteen Southern states. They named their print shop a proper Southern name The Old Try and almost immediately their unique letterpress designs, with Southern images and catchphrases, were a runaway hit. I fell in love with this Mississippi poster because growing up we all spelled Mississippi that way!

Here are a few more of my favorites, but I encourage you to visit The Old Try website to see all of the really cool posters available which deserve proper placement in your home, or office, or to be given as a gift to a fellow Southerner.

One of my home states: Virginia aka Old Dominion.

In the South, of course, manners are de rigueur.

The Yellow Hammer.
