LOUIS VUITTON is known for their forward-thinking collaborations with contemporary artists, but most of them have been men, so I was thrilled when they constructed a beach house originally designed by architect CHARLOTTE PERRIAND for Art Basel Miami this year.
La Maison au Bord de l’Eau, or the house beside the water, was originally designed in 1934 for an architecture contest earning second prize, but the beach house was never built and Charlotte went on to design for houses like Le Corbusier. She has been a muse for Louis Vuitton more than once including the Spring 2014 collection.
An important figure in women’s history, Charlotte was known for her cutting-edge designs and she was one of the few women credited with shaping 20th century modern architecture and furniture design.
