Scribble, Scratch + Spray

Umbrella Girl, 2008

Last October, British graffiti artist BANKSY scribbled, scratched and sprayed the New York City streets with his Better Out Than In graffiti creations and, at the time, I kinda wished he’d blanketed the streets of Washington, DC instead to shake things up a bit. I know, I know graffiti is considered vandalism and it’s illegal, but I’m fascinated by its urban storytelling and underlying social and political messages.

Banksy’s Umbrella Girl was created in New Orleans post-Katrina to represent the slow recovery after the levees failed. It depicts a young girl relying on her umbrella for protection only to discover that her umbrella was the source of the rain.
