Ode to Kinshasa
Loïs Mallou Jones
mixed media, 1972
Imagine. It’s your first trip to Africa and you’re inspired. How do you capture it?
If you’re LOÏS MALLOU JONES, you create Ode to Kinshasa. Inspired by tribal masks painted by Congolese artists, Loïs adapted the triangle and diamond patterns into a collage using gold leaf and Japanese papers. The intense colors and center eye represent what Loïs saw as she traveled the continent as a U.S. cultural ambassador.
