“I don’t want to surround myself with my work because I think it could lose energy if it sits around too long, only living through my eyes. It needs to go out and have a life.”
SHINIQUE SMITH is an emerging artist known for her dramatic use of found objects, graffiti, Abstract Expressionism and Japanese calligraphy to covey our superficial idealization of the “stuff” we surround ourselves with. The Baltimore native’s social and cultural references are also powerful, exuberant and thought-provoking. I’m completely fascinated by her work.
